Japan's Top Three Automobiles

Japan has been producing automobiles for almost as long as America, to the surprise of some. As the American automobile industry has changed, so has Japan’s. To this day, however, Japan still has the highest concentration of automakers of any country on earth: nine to be exact. Three, however, are real standouts producing not only high quality vehicles but reaching well beyond Japan to all corners of the planet. Let’s take a look at the top three and how they are impacting the North American market.

Toyota – As the largest of all Japanese automakers, Toyota ranks only second to General Motors in global production. Toyota vehicles were first introduced to the North American market in the 1960s and were, at the time, widely panned by critics as being too small and inferior in quality. By the late 1970s, Toyota quality levels began to exceed the industry standard. Today, some consider Toyota the benchmark by which all car lines are judged; the company’s Lexus line of luxury vehicles and Scion brand of youth oriented vehicles are also leaders in their respective classes.

Honda – The only thing Honda lacks versus Toyota is size. Still, when you compare Honda vehicles with comparable Toyota models, Honda holds its own. The first Honda, a Civic, was introduced to the North American market in 1971 and was soon followed by the Accord as well as the Prelude. Routinely, the Accord battles Toyota’s Camry for the top spot in U.S. car sales year in and year out, while the Honda Odyssey battles the Toyota Sienna for the highest quality minivan [Chrysler’s minivans still are the best sellers]. Acura is Honda’s luxury car division which has also competed successfully with Toyota’s Lexus line up.

Nissan – Toyota and Honda are the only two fully independent Japanese automakers left in the world today as Nissan has since ceded control to Renault, France’s largest automaker. The first Nissans to hit the North American market did so in the 1960s under the Datsun model name. By the early 1980s the Datsun name was jettisoned in favor of Nissan and today the Nissan name is equated with some of the highest quality cars on the road. In the late 1980s Nissan launched the Infiniti division, a maker of luxurious cars that routinely battles with the likes of BMW, Lexus, Acura, Cadillac, and Mercedes as a top provider of opulent vehicles.

So, there you have it. Three top Japanese brands that have made a name for themselves. You may not own a Toyota, a Honda, or a Nissan, but you have to give credit where credit is due: all three automakers are proven leaders in a highly competitive and every changing industry.

Toyota-aa, Toyota-aa, pentru familia-aa mea-aa!

SuperBlog2009 ma pune sa ma gandesc care sunt atuurile Toyota in categoria masinilor family.

Pai sa vedem ce face o masina sa fie “family”.

Ce vrea o mama de la o masina:

  • siguranta, ca sa ii fie protejata familia in caz de accident;
  • spatiu pentru jumatate de casa pentru vacante lungi;
  • loc destul in spate pentru macar trei plozi si centurile aferente (chiar daca are unul singur, caci visul secret si nu neaparat constient al oricarei muieri e o casa plina de kinderi);
  • oglinda si la aparatoarea de soare din dreapta;

  • confort, ca doar el conduce si e nasol sa te dai jos din masina rupt de spate;
  • consum mic si in oras si in afara, pentru drumuri scurte si drumuri lungi deopotriva;
  • putere, sa se simta si el barbat cand nu e plecat cu familia dupa el si sa poata sa-i dea talpa si masina sa nu fie fasaita si lenesa ca o vadana cu fundul mare;
  • controlul geamurilor, fie si numai pentru a-si enerva nevasta blocandu-i accesul, plus ca e o siguranta in plus pentru hoarda de huni mici din spate;
  • design care sa nu aduca asa de tare a “family car”, chestie de demnitate masculina…
  • un bord vintage dar garnisit, sa se simta ca in filmele cu magnati americani;
  • aer conditionat, sa aiba cu ce se lauda la prietenii cu masini mai fraierute sau mai vechi.

Ce vrea un copil de la o masina (nu conteaza foarte tare, dar…):

  • daca e baiat, sa o conduca si el (cum Toyota e viabila, sunt sanse ca masina sa mearga pana face plodul 18 ani si carnet…);
  • daca e baiat, sa aiba multe butoane si luminite, sa poata sa se uite fascinat cum o conduce tati si sa isi imagineze ca o conduce si el;
  • daca e fata, sa poata sa se uite pe geam si sa poata sa puna si scaunul de masina al papusii, plus o gramada de alte jucarii si accesorii de papusa;

Toyota Announces Fix for Pedal Prob; Still Working on Fixing Reputation

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Toyota has identified a vehicle-based remedy for the problem with accelerator pedal entrapment. The government agency says Toyota plans to reconfigure the pedal.

But what about all the media hype regarding other potential causes (faulty electronic computer systems among the most popular)? Perhaps the carmaker will soon squash the rumors once it gets a handle on fixing the four-million-vehicle flub. First things first.

If you own one of the following, Toyota will notify you on a rolling basis—starting with those driving ES 350, Camry, and Avalon models.

• 2007-2010 Camry
• 2005-2010 Avalon
• 2004-2009 Prius
• 2005-2010 Tacoma
• 2007-2010 Tundra
• 2007-2010 ES 350
• 2006-2010 IS 250
• 2006-2010 IS 350

Until Toyota contacts you, remove the driver-side floor mats on the above vehicles. Particularly, if the car is yours. And don’t replace them until Toyota has fixed your vehicle. The fix will include:

1) A reconfiguration of the accelerator pedal, and possibly the shape of the floor surface underneath the pedal. You could get a replacement pedal as soon as April 2010, even if your vehicle already received a modified pedal under the recall.

2) An installation of a brake override system as an “extra measure of confidence” for the following recalled models: Camry, Avalon and Lexus ES 350, IS 350 and IS 250. With this new system, the vehicle will still stop even if you apply the brake and accelerator pedals simultaneously. A note on the government agency’s site reads, “NHTSA is particularly pleased that Toyota is taking this additional step.” Um, yay?

3) Newly designed replacement driver- and front-passenger side all-weather mats for those vehicles formerly dressed in any genuine Toyota or Lexus accessory all-weather floor mats.

As early as January 2010, Toyota will get to work on the recalled vehicles. It will start by first instructing dealers on how to reshape existing accelerator pedals. Then it will distribute replacement accelerator pedals for installation on vehicles not yet worked on. Even if you have your existing pedal modified, you are still eligible to receive a shiny, new one when Toyota doles them out.

If you have questions, contact Toyota directly at (800) 331-4331. Or access the NHTSA hotline at (888) 327-4236.

Oran Park Round 6 - The Final Round

What a fantastic weekend. After more than a year watching from the sidelines it was awesome to get back behind the wheel and race again. Particularly at such a special event – the final ever state round to be held at the Oran Park Grand Prix circuit.

All official race results can be found on Natsoft.

Qualifying on Saturday morning was a somewhat relaxed affair, given that the engine was fresh from a rebuild, so the running in process was to take place somewhat during qualifying. Given this, I qualified pretty much where I expected, right down near the tail of the field – hopeful of making my way through and up to the midfield during the first race on Saturday afternoon.

Toyota pits

The Toyota stable of Youl and Jagger!

Things were all going to plan when I’d worked my way up to about 20th (from 27th) in the first few laps of the race. However, Geoff Fear (Pulsar) had an oil filter failure coming into the esses which left some oil on the track. I ran onto the grass as a result, and lost about 3 places. The rest of the race was run under safety car, as the Pulsar needed attention from the fire marshalls (no real damage done – he would be back to race on Sunday).

Race 2 on Sunday morning was to develop into an intense dual with Stephen Dellis (Mirage). Steve managed to get past under brakes coming onto the straight on the first lap (after a small series of love taps during the lap). However only one lap later I managed to get past him again at the start of the straight when he boxed himself in behind Phillip Larmour (Dolomite). For the remainder of the race he was never far from the rear bumper of the Corona. He had far more corner speed and grip, but the Corona had power (and size!) on its side. Despite being able to get alongside on a couple of occasions, I managed to hold him out for the whole race. It is a shame that the video (below) wasn’t looking out the rear of the car!

Race 3 on Sunday afternoon was another similar affair. This time Steve Dellis (Mirage) was able to get past early in the race and was too fast for me to keep up with. However he made a mistake at the end of the straight which resulted in the exit of both Dellis and Passfield (Datto 1600). I ended up finishing just behind Wildridge (Gridfilla Escort).

Once racing had finished for the weekend, one of the highlights of the whole weekend was to be able to have a BBQ on the main straight, and to actually walk the track for one final time.

OPGP track walk

Some enthusiastic racers walk the track to say goodbye

I need to say a massive thank you to Ashley Birks for the time he has put into the car over the past 6 months to rebuild the engine and get it ready for this meeting. Also, Al Palmer Repairs has continued to support MY Racing for the past 3 years. I appreciate Al’s support immensely. If anyone lives in the Penrith area and needs any servicing work done on their cars, I can’t recommend Al highly enough. (And make sure you let him know you’re a MY Racing supporter!)

Hail Mary: Chevrolet's Cruze, cruising into L.A.

The L.A. Auto Show is this week, and every year manufacturers show the best of their new cars, trucks, SUVs and now crossovers.  This year, GM has two vehicles, and the Cruze is arguably the more important of the two.  The other is the Volt, which we will be reporting on when more information becomes available.

I say that the Cruze is arguably the more important of the two vehicles which GM is releasing in 2010.  It’s quite possibly the most important vehicle GM is prepping for sale.  The compact car segment, where most offerings fall under the $20,000 MSRP mark, is one of the most hotly-contested markets in the US automotive marketplace.  There are well over a dozen entries, with more and more being introduced each year.  A lot can ride on a compact car purchase, as it’s usually a younger buyer, and based on their experience with that first car, each manufacturer hopes they will continue to buy in the brand and move up to the more expensive, and higher-margin vehicles that are offered.

This is where GM has faltered in recent years.  The Cavalier was a decent seller, but quality and reliability concerns stalled sales and led to its replacement by the Cobalt in 2004.  The Cobalt was pretty much a non-starter, and its only popular variant was the SS, offered with upgraded performance for a sticker price in the low $20,000s.  While the recently-redesigned Malibu is garnering great praise and increased sales, the Cobalt just isn’t competitive in its segment.

Enter the Chevrolet Cruze.  Slated for a late-2010 release as a 2011 car, the Cruze will replace the Cobalt, and shares its platform with the upcoming Chevrolet Volt.  This gives both cars a good place to start, and in GM’s post-bankruptcy life, saving money is always a good thing.

GM is aiming squarely at the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, aiming to best them in safety, roominess, and content.  With more size, more airbags, and enough goodies to keep technology-loving drivers happy, the Cruze promises to be GM’s best effort yet to draw in younger or price-conscious buyers.

The big things GM is doing with the Cruze to show its determination to become competitive again include new fuel-efficient engines, including a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine which promises up to 40 MPG highway, modern transmissions, the aforementioned technology options, as well as a modern interior using high-quality materials and design.

  • 2011 Chevrolet Cruze at a Glance:
    • Popular global car refined for America
    • Expected segment-best fuel economy – up to 40 mpg highway – with new family of small-displacement engines, including Ecotec 1.4L I-4 turbo
    • Progressive design with exceptional levels of refinement, quietness and build quality
    • More spacious interior and greater cargo room than Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla
    • Ten standard air bags help make it one of the safest cars in its class
    • Built at Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant
    • On sale in third quarter of 2010
    • Five-year/100,000-mile powertain warranty – the best coverage in America
